The Department of Natural Resources reminds waterfowl hunters that they have another opportunity to pursue their sport beginning Jan. 2 as duck season and the late Canada goose season open in the South Zone, except in selected Goose Management Units (GMUs).
The late goose season has proven effective at reducing resident goose populations, alleviating some of the conflicts the birds cause with landowners in spring and summer.
Duck season is open for two days, while Canada goose season runs through Jan. 31.
The daily limit for ducks is the same as during the regular seasons: six per day, no more than four mallards (one hen), three wood ducks, two redheads, two scaup, one pintail, one black duck and one canvasback. The possession limit is twice the daily legal limit.
The daily limit for Canada geese is five with a possession limit of 10 except in the GMUs.
In the Saginaw County and Tuscola-Huron GMUs, the limit is two Canada geese daily, four in possession during the Jan. 2-31 season. In the Allegan County GMU, the season is Dec. 28 - Jan. 17 with a daily limit of two and a possession limit of four.
Hunters must possess a valid small game license and a Michigan waterfowl license. All federal waterfowl regulations -- a Federal Migratory Bird Hunting stamp, non-toxic shells, and shotguns plugged so they can hold no more than three shells -- apply.
