BUTNER, N.C. (November 5, 2009) – A prolonged period of below-average rainfall may dry up hunting opportunities on the Flat River Waterfowl Impoundment at the Butner-Falls of the Neuse Game Land in Durham County.
The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is warning hunters planning to attend permit-only hunts scheduled to begin Nov. 14 that the impoundment is providing no productive waterfowl habitat because of the dry weather. Without substantial rainfall through the end of the year, the situation is unlikely to improve.
Water pumped from the adjacent Flat River typically floods the impoundment, but the river has been too low.
All late-season waterfowl hunting on the Flat River Impoundment is by randomly drawn permit only and requires a $5 non-refundable administrative fee.
Updates on water conditions may be obtained by calling (919) 620-0089 prior to scheduled hunts.
