Benton Lake National Wildlife Refuge, about 7 miles north of Great Falls, is hosting a youth waterfowl-upland bird clinic from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sept. 20.
The clinic will give youth, ages 10 to 15, a chance to learn the skills to be a successful waterfowl and upland bird hunter.
Topics at this year’s clinic are: hunting safety, ethics and traditions, Refuge regulations, waterfowl identification, decoy placement, duck calling, shotgun patterning and target shooting, shotgun distance estimating, and dog handling. Members of the Golden Triangle Sporting Dog Club will demonstrate upland bird hunting techniques with pointing and flushing dogs.
To sign up, youth must be between 10 and 15 years of age. For more information and to register, call Bob Johnson at 727-7400 ext. 226. Advance sign-up is required with participation limited to the first 40 enrollees. The clinic is free of charge. The dog club will provide lunch.
Sponsors include Benton Lake National Wildlife Refuge; U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife, & Parks, the Golden Triangle Sporting Dog Club, Upper Missouri Chapter of Pheasants Forever and the Great Falls Chapter of Ducks Unlimited.
