Our goose hunts are all done on private land. We offer bluff hunting where we pass shoot geese or field hunting where we set up decoys and use flags and calls to entice them to come in. Pierre, S.D., is in the heart of the Central flyway and has some of the greatest Canada goose hunting in the United States.

You need to let Thunderstik know in late May and they will send out license applications to those who would like to apply. The application process is a lottery system. Most years they have had good luck getting licenses but there is no guarantee. Another option is to goose hunt on the Grassrope, an area of the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe. Thunderstik works together to provide a great hunt and you can buy a license when you get there.

Each fall thousands of Greater and Lesser Canada geese, snows, blues, speckle bellies, and Northern mallards travel the Missouri River Flyway through our backyard. Depending on the flight pattern, we will call them into decoys or “shoot the pass” on the Missouri River bluffs.

Around the beginning of November the Canada geese, snows and speckle bellies also pass through this area. Upwards of some 650,000 ducks and geese spend several months of the fall in the 30-mile radius of Pierre during the peak of the migration. Waterfowl hunts can be combined with the pheasant hunt, hunting both in the same day.

Whether hunting birds, or big game, the hunts can be combined according to various seasons of each. We have miles of creek with excellent cover for both birds and big game. Rolling prairie hills, wheat, corn and milo fields provide good habitat and also attract geese from the Oahe Reservoir.
