DFG Announces 2009 Waterfowl Population Estimates

A 2009 Department of Fish and Game (DFG) waterfowl survey indicates that the number of mallards statewide remains steady, but the overall duck population has declined.

Youth Waterfowl Hunting Days a Hit on DFG Wildlife Areas - Feb. 16, 2011
Young hunters from San Diego to Eureka took to the marsh the weekend of Feb. 5-6 for Youth Waterfowl Hunting Days. The hunt affords a special opportunity for young people to enjoy a hunt, learn more about the sport and be mentored by non-hunting adults. Youth hunters must be 15 years of age or younger, have completed the state hunter education course, possess a valid hunting license and be accompanied by a non-hunting adult 18 years of age or older.

Deadline Approaching for Late Season Aleutian Goose Hunts - Feb. 02, 2011
The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) is offering north coast Aleutian goose hunts in Humboldt and Del Norte counties in February and March. These hunts are organized by the Shared Habitat Alliance for Recreational Enhancement (SHARE) Program, in partnership with the California Waterfowl Association (CWA).

Young Hunters Invited to Participate in Youth Waterfowl Hunt - Dec. 23, 2010
One of the best youth hunting opportunities in California is coming up the weekend of Feb 5-6, 2011. For two days, young hunters will be able to hunt waterfowl with no competition from adults. These two days of waterfowl season are only for youth hunters age 15 years old or younger with a junior hunting license.

2010/2011 Waterfowl Hunting Opportunities Available Soon at Eden Landing Ecological Reserve - Oct. 19, 2010
The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) is offering waterfowl hunting opportunities at Eden Landing Ecological Reserve (ELER) in Hayward. The reserve is composed of former industrial salt ponds now managed by DFG as low-salinity waterfowl habitat. Access to ELER for waterfowl hunting will be open only on the dates listed below. There is no fee for these hunts.

One-day Waterfowl Hunting Clinic to be Offered at San Jacinto Wildlife Area - Sep. 20, 2010
The California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) will offer a waterfowl hunting clinic Oct. 2 at the San Jacinto Wildlife Area in Riverside County.

Large Canada Goose Season to be Split for Most California Counties - Sep. 16, 2010
The California Fish and Game Commission approved a split season for large Canada geese in the Balance of the State Zone for the 2010/2011 season. Except for the North Coast Special Management Area, the hunting season for large Canada geese in the Balance of the State Zone will be open from Oct. 2 through Oct. 6, 2010, and again with the general waterfowl season from Oct. 23 through Jan. 30, 2011.

DFG Completes 2010 Waterfowl Breeding Population Survey - Jun. 21, 2010
The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) has completed its 2010 waterfowl breeding population survey. The resulting data show that the overall number of breeding ducks has increased since last year, with the number of mallards - the most abundant duck breeding in the state - increasing 22 percent from last year.
